Evan Schuman The Best Point-of-Sale (POS) Systems of 2017 We compare seven point-of-sale (POS) software solutions that focus on the restaurant industry and are served up via the cloud. What is Point of Sale (POS) Software? Point-of-sale (POS) software solutions can be summed up as 'cash registers on steroids.' Even before the rise of mobile and cloud technology, solutions took the basics of the cash register and expanded them to task directly to back-end systems, credit card payment processors,, and more. The cloud has become a hot trend in this space because it's allowed many small to midsize businesses (SMBs) to make use of advanced POS services because they can avoid the ongoing expense of deploying and maintaining a back-end server at every location. While there are several kinds of payment processing solutions out there, including and even online, the solutions reviewed here are full-on cash registers. That means they communicate with back-end accounting software and can handle any kind of payment, including cash. But perhaps the most important trend in today's POS systems is mobility—the ability to move POS functionality out from behind the cash register station and into the hands of roving employees for faster, more customer-centric business. Few industries have a more mobile sales model than restaurants, which is why we chose to focus this POS software solution review roundup on restaurant-oriented POS solutions, both cloud and on-premises as well as mobile and stationary, so you can decide for yourself which solution is best for you. Important Considerations For restaurant operations, the right POS system can be a make-or-break decision. During the most critical times for your business—the pre-business-hour rush of a commuter coffee shop, the frantic luncheonette that has to get everyone in and out during an abbreviated lunch hour, or an eatery serving a casual but fast dinner—the POS system needs to perform in just the right way. A slow user interface (UI) can mean fewer meals sold and unhappy customers, but a feature-anemic system can cause back-end accounting problems or even drop essentials such as credit card processing. Today's credit card industry has made processing payments more secure but also more confusing than ever before. A primary concern are new (EMV) chips, which store data on integrated circuits on the credit card face rather than magnetic strips on the back. Not only does this require a hardware change at the POS system level in order to process cards this way, it also uses different back-end authentication mechanisms as well. Another fast-growing standard is the (NFC) transaction, which is an electronic payment system being popularized by mobile giants, such as Google Wallet and Apple Pay. Making sure your POS system candidate can handle these new emerging systems is only half the equation. The other half includes whether or not that implementation will annoy or please your customer, as well as whether or not it will help or hinder your PCI-compliance efforts. And remember, your accounting department won't be satisfied with a POS system that's just able to process cash in the front of the house. How it helps back-end processes is just as important. Tracking cash flow, inventory, and customer habits are capabilities that can be central to many operations and your POS system winds up being the data collection hub for much of that information. How does it handle imparting that data back to you? Are the reports easily customized? Sufficiently detailed? Do they cater sufficient to your specific business? Is scheduling included? Another critical area, especially for restaurants, is product support. If the system crashes at the start of your busy period, how easy is to get someone on the phone? That's a question that can often be solved by paying for the appropriate support plan. But just because you have someone on the phone doesn't mean your system is back online, and you've still got hungry customers to feed. A backup solution is essential here and that's especially true in the case of cloud-based POS solutions, which can suffer not only from software problems but also Internet connectivity issues. Ensuring that your vendor has your back in these situations is key, but knowing exactly how and where that support will come from can be critical, too. The Best Tool Through the Eyes of Customers To help you work through these issues, PCMag has looked at seven of the more popular restaurant-capable POS systems. To get a better feel for how these solutions work within this particular vertical, we decided to base our reviews on the opinions of real-world restaurant managers who are using these systems every day. That approach allowed us to focus in on issues important to restaurant industry insiders. For example, we found that part of the challenge in evaluating POS system customization capability is that it may not clear pre-sale what the default functionality delivers. Travis Hall, Director of Operations for Wild Eggs (which owns two restaurants in Lexington, Kentucky), had worked with one POS system that allowed for alerts, but a customization he really wanted wasn't available. The system would issue an alert if comp (free) sales topped one percent for the day, but his stores routinely hit that number. Therefore, he found it annoying and distracting, and wanted to set the threshold to double the default. He couldn't get the system to do that. Another question that Hall encourages restaurants evaluating POS systems to ask: How does the system handle check splitting? (Hall was far from alone in regretting not having asked about check splitting pre-purchase.) We also found that sometimes a post-purchase surprise can be a good one. Scott Hunsicker is General Manager of the Reading Fightin' Phils, a job that includes overseeing food concessions for the minor-league baseball team. Hunsicker said he was surprised by how valuable his ownership team found mobile-accessible, real-time reporting to be. 'Using their phones, ownership can see everything. I don't know that you grasp the value of that until you've got it,' he said. 'You see labor costs, what's selling, house accounts, running tabs, etc.' A key item Hunsicker regretted not having asked prior to purchase? How rugged the POS mobile systems are in terms of being left out in the rain, and how easily, safely, and quickly they can be moved when a lightning storm hits with little warning. Making any technology purchase decision requires getting the right answers to all your key questions. But knowing which questions to ask is a matter only experience can teach you. Use the experience of our interviewees to make the right POS system choice for your business.

It reportedly affects up to of the population, and public figures from the fictional Jaime Lannister in HBO’s Game of Thrones to real-life comic have grappled with the learning disorder. But have you ever heard of dyscalculia, the math disability? Probably not, even though up to of elementary school students in the U.S. May struggle with it. A big part of the general population's unfamiliarity with dyscalculia has to do with our culture’s general discomfort with numbers, and our ingrained belief that math—compared to reading—is just supposed to be hard. Gavin Price, an assistant professor at Vanderbilt University who has researched dyscalculia in several countries, says, ' When I teach classes, I’ll ask at the beginning, 'How many people think they’re not good at math, they’re bad at math?' And half of them put their hands up. Then I ask, 'Are any of you bad at reading?' And nobody puts their hand up. Edward Hubbard, an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, echoes this sentiment, and adds that attitudes toward math may play a part not just in our overall lack of dyscalculia awareness, but in the fact that dyscalculia research is at least two decades behind dyslexia research. “I think some of it is cultural attitudes towards math,” says Hubbard, who has researched dyscalculia in France and the United States and heads up his university’s Educational Neuroscience lab, which is embarking on a new dyscalculia study. “If you look around, the number of people who sort of say, 'I’m bad at math,' and laugh about it, or will say, without batting an eye, 'I’m just not a math person,' is striking.” So, in the interest of raising dyscalculia awareness, begin your crash course on the little-known mathematical disorder with these 11 facts. The term dyscalculia was coined in the 1940s, but didn’t really become fully recognized until the 1974 work of Czechoslovakian Ladislav Kosc. Kosc as 'a structural disorder of mathematical abilities' caused by impairment to the parts of the brain used in mathematical calculations, without simultaneous impairment to one's general mental abilities. (In layman's terms: You're bad at math because parts of your brain aren't working properly, but you're not otherwise mentally handicapped.) Today, some research communities also use the terms “math dyslexia” and “math learning disability” to refer to the condition. There are two types of dyscalculia. Most people diagnosed with the disorder have, which means they were born with it. But, with what's known as acquired dyscalculia, the disorder can also arise later in life, usually as the result of a stroke or injury. Struggling with matrices in algebra or flunking calculus in college doesn’t usually mean you have dyscalculia. This disability tends to impede your most basic skills. “Somebody who has dyscalculia will struggle with the most basic arithmetic facts, 5+2=7,” Hubbard says. “They will struggle to tell you seven is larger than five. We’ll see them counting on their fingers for basic addition.” 4. Dyscalculia may be rooted in the brain's parietal lobe. What causes dyscalculia? To date, the most popular theory maintains that dyscalculia is connected to an inability to judge quantities, a sense that is concentrated in the parietal lobe. “One of the theories that exists is that dyscalculia is really caused by an impairment in what’s known as either the number sense or the approximate number system,” Price says. “And that system is what allows us to know that, for example, a group of five apples is more than three apples. It allows us to compare, and order, and process quantities without the use of verbal symbols or labels.' 'And so what we did [in a study in Finland],' Price continues, 'was scan these dyscalculic kids while they were doing those type of tasks, and we compared their brain activation to the typically developing kids, and we found that indeed this region in the parietal cortex, the intraparietal sulcus, behaved atypically in these kids when they were processing these non-symbolic numerical magnitudes.” 5. Researchers have been able to induce dyscalculia in patients. In 2007, a group of researchers at University College London were able to engender temporary dyscalculia in people who don’t have the disorder by using transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS. TMS is often used to treat depression, and involves placing a large against the scalp. In the study, researchers applied TMS to the right parietal lobe while their subjects were comparing quantities, and found that the stimulation briefly made it hard for the subject to tell if one quantity was bigger than the other. 6. Dyscalculia may manifest itself in different ways. While the above research shows that dyscalculia is closely associated with problems in the parietal lobe that affect one's understanding of the number system, researchers like Hubbard think some people who suffer from dyscalculia might feel the disorder differently. “The problem may not be with number sense itself, but with linking number symbols with number sense,” Hubbard says. “Maybe it differs across other people. Maybe there is a subgroup of people for whom their difficulties are in the number system itself, for other people it’s in symbols.” 7. Dyscalculia is represented in pop culture. While dyslexic characters are much more common in popular culture, there are some examples of dyscalculics to be found. Fans of Canadian teen drama may remember Liberty Van Zandt having it, and X-Men fans may know that Wolverine's sidekick Jubilee is a whiz at but not numbers. Dyscalculia doesn't discriminate by gender. You may have noticed that both our pop culture examples were female, but dyscalculia, at least at this juncture, does not appear to have a gender gap. “My sense is that it’s pretty even. But at the same time, I feel like the gender ratio has been less a focus of investigation than it was for dyslexia,” Hubbard says, adding that research saying boys are more prone to dyslexia than girls is “pretty well supported.” Hubbard is aware that this flies in the face of the (offensive) stereotype that women are worse at math than men—a generalization that seems to have little basis in fact. “What we see is that the gender differences [in mathematical ability] have gotten smaller and smaller. As we have better role models for girls in math, we’ve had greater opportunities and fewer impediments to girls being able to do well. The differences that we’re seeing are largely due to cultural differences.” 9. Math Facts Whiz Download From the developer: 'The cards flash before your eyes and you must answer them as quickly as possible to get the fastest time. Your time is. However, some groups are at greater risk of dyscalculia than others. People with Turner syndrome, epilepsy, and Fragile X syndrome are. You are also at greater risk for dyscalculia if you have (ADHD), if your mother drank during her pregnancy, or if you were born prematurely. It can be tough to diagnose. “One of the problems, one of the challenges with dyscalculia, the reason that it hasn’t gotten the same attention [as dyslexia], is that it is a highly co-morbid disorder,” Price says. “Often, people who are bad at math are bad at a number of things.” But while a diagnosis may be difficult to come by, treating a patient's other conditions may also alleviate his or her dyscalculia. For example, one study of people with ADHD who both were and weren’t dyscalculic found that putting them on a stimulant improved their calculating ability, but not their basic numerical skills. There is no cure for dyscalculia. But don't lose hope! Dyscalculics can learn math, even if they may always struggle with parts of it because of their neurological differences. Luckily, you use more than the parietal part of your brain when doing math, Price says. “Multiple skills come under the umbrella of math, and all of these things will engage all of the lobes of the brain.” Therefore, early detection is key in helping children cope with dyscalculia. And for adults struggling with the disorder, a shift in attitude may be the first step in overcoming the obstacles dyscalculia presents. “When we think of struggling with reading, most adults would not think of going back and listening to the sounds of language,” Hubbard says. “Similarly, if you recognize that you’re struggling with math, your first thought isn’t probably that you should go back to trying to see how much stuff is out there, use this basic sense of number that I have, and try to link that to basic number symbol. People would probably try to work at a higher level. What you should really be doing is going back and looking at these foundational skills, things that most teachers, most parents, and most people assume we all just have.”. IStock The date of the winter solstice varies from year to year, and can fall anywhere between December 20 and December 23, with the 21st or 22nd being the most common dates. The reason for this is because the tropical year—the time it takes for the sun to return to the same spot relative to Earth—is different from the calendar year. The next solstice occurring on December 20 will not happen until 2080, and the next December 23 solstice will not occur until 2303. IT HAPPENS AT A SPECIFIC, BRIEF MOMENT. IStock Not only does the solstice occur on a specific day, but it also occurs at a specific time of day, corresponding to the instant the North Pole is aimed furthest away from the sun on the 23.5 degree tilt of the Earth’s axis. This is also the time when the sun shines directly over the Tropic of Capricorn. In 2017, this moment occurs at 4:28 p.m. UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). For those of us on Eastern Standard Time, the solstice will occur at 11:28 a.m. On December 21. And regardless of where you live, the solstice happens at the same moment for everyone on the planet (you can check what time it will occur for you ). IT MARKS THE LONGEST NIGHT AND SHORTEST DAY OF THE YEAR FOR THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE. IStock As most are keenly aware, daylight hours grow shorter and shorter as the solstice approaches, and begin to slowly lengthen afterward. It’s no wonder that the day of the solstice is referred to in some cultures as the 'shortest day' or 'extreme of winter.' New York City will experience 9 hours and 15 minutes of sunlight, compared to 15 hours and 5 minutes on the summer solstice. Helsinki, Finland, will get 5 hours and 49 minutes of light. Barrow, Alaska, will not have a sunrise at all (and hasn't since mid-November; its next sunrise will be on January 22), while the North Pole has had no sunrise since October. The South Pole, though, will be basking in the glow of the midnight sun, which won't set until March. ANCIENT CULTURES VIEWED THE WINTER SOLSTICE AS A TIME OF DEATH AND REBIRTH. IStock The seeming death of the light and very real threat of starvation over the winter months would have weighed heavily on early societies, who held varied solstice celebrations and rites meant to herald the return of the Sun and hope for new life. Scandinavian and Germanic pagans lit fires and may have burned Yule logs as a symbolic means of welcoming back the light. Cattle and other animals were slaughtered around midwinter, followed by feasting on what was the last fresh meat for several months. The modern Druidic celebration Alban Arthan reveres the death of the Old Sun and birth of the New Sun. THE DAY MARKS THE DISCOVERY OF NEW AND STRANGE WORLDS. IStock Solstice derives from the Latin scientific term solstitium, containing sol, which means 'sun,' and the past participle stem of sistere, meaning 'to make stand.' This comes from the fact that the sun’s position in the sky relative to the horizon at noon, which increases and decreases throughout the year, appears to pause in the days surrounding the solstice. In modern times, we view the phenomenon of the solstice from the position of space, and of the Earth relative to the Sun. Earlier people, however, were thinking about the Sun’s trajectory, how long it stayed in the sky and what sort of light it cast. STONEHENGE IS ALIGNED TO THE SUNSET ON WINTER SOLSTICE. IStock The primary axis of the megalithic monument is oriented to the setting sun, while Newgrange, another structure built around the same time as Stonehenge, lines up with the winter solstice sunrise. Some have theorized that the position of the Sun was of religious significance to the people who built Stonehenge, while other theories hold that the monument is constructed along natural features that happen to align with it. The purpose of Stonehenge is still subject to debate, but its importance on the winter solstice continues into the modern era, as thousands of hippies, pagans, and other types of enthusiasts gather there every year to celebrate the occasion. ANCIENT ROMANS CELEBRATED REVERSALS AT THE MIDWINTER FESTIVAL OF SATURNALIA. Christopher Furlong/Getty Images The holiday, which began as a festival to honor the agricultural god Saturn, was held to commemorate the dedication of his temple in 497 BCE. It quickly became a time of widespread revelry and debauchery in which societal roles were overturned, with masters serving their slaves and servants being allowed to insult their masters. Mask-wearing and play-acting were also part of Saturnalia’s reversals, with each household electing a King of Misrule. Saturnalia was gradually replaced by Christmas throughout the Roman Empire, but many of its customs survive as Christmas traditions. SOME TRADITIONS HOLD THAT DARK SPIRITS WALK THE EARTH ON THE WINTER SOLSTICE. IStock The Iranian festival of Yalda is celebrated on the longest night of the year. In pre-Islamic times, it heralded the birth of Mithra, the ancient sun god, and his triumph over darkness. Zoroastrian lore holds that evil spirits wander the earth and the forces of the destructive spirit Ahriman are strongest on this long night. People are encouraged to stay up most of the night in the company of one another, eating, talking, and sharing poetry and stories, in order to avoid any brushes with dark entities. Beliefs about the presence of evil on the longest night are also echoed in Celtic and Germanic folklore. SOME THOUGHT THE WORLD WOULD END ON THE 2012 WINTER SOLSTICE. IStock December 21, 2012 corresponds to the date 13.0.0.0.0 in the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar used by the ancient Mayans, marking the end of a 5126-year cycle. Some people feared this juncture would bring about the end of the world or some other cataclysmic event. Others took a more New Age-y view (literally) and believed it heralded the birth of a new era of deep transformation for Earth and its inhabitants. In the end, neither of these things appeared to occur, leaving the world to turn through winter solstices indefinitely, or at least as long as the Sun lasts. A version of this story originally ran in 2015. You know not to get them wet, expose them to bright light, or feed them after midnight. But here are 20 things you might not know about Joe Dante’s creature-filled dark comedy classic. ITS UNEXPECTEDLY DARK THEMES ARE PARTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CREATION OF THE PG-13 RATING. Truth be told, it’s Steven Spielberg who is really responsible for the introduction of the PG-13 rating. Both Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which he directed, and Gremlins, which he executive produced, were rated PG upon their release, and subsequently criticized for not being kid-appropriate. To avoid being slapped with an R rating in the future, Spielberg suggested that the MPAA add a rating between PG and R. On August 10, 1984, Red Dawn became the first movie to be released with the new PG-13 rating. BUT GREMLINS COULD HAVE BEEN A WHOLE LOT DARKER. The original, written by Chris Columbus, was much, much darker. Case in point: Earlier scenes included the Gremlins eating Billy’s dog then decapitating his mom and throwing her head down the stairs. Spielberg, director Joe Dante, and Warner Bros. Were all in agreement that they should tone down the gore in order to make the movie more family-friendly. CHRIS COLUMBUS DIDN’T WRITE GREMLINS WITH THE IDEA THAT IT WOULD ACTUALLY BE MADE. He wrote it as a spec script and writing sample. It found its way into the hands of Spielberg, who that, “It's one of the most original things I've come across in many years, which is why I bought it.” 4. THE GREMLINS WERE INSPIRED BY MICE THAT INHABITED COLUMBUS’S APARTMENT. “By day, it was pleasant enough,” Columbus of the Manhattan loft that he lived in while attending film school at NYU. “But at night, what sounded like a platoon of mice would come out and to hear them skittering around in the blackness was really creepy.” Those mice inspired the Gremlins. THE SCRIPT DOESN’T INCLUDE MUCH GREMLIN DIALOGUE. Much of the chatter spoken by Gizmo and the Gremlins is ad libbed, or in reaction to whatever is happening in the scene. Keeping the dialogue loose also allowed the filmmakers to localize the dialogue for the film’s various international markets. HOWIE MANDEL IS THE VOICE OF GIZMO. It was the suggestion of voice actor Frank Welker, who voiced Stripe in Gremlins (and Fred on Scooby-Doo before that), that Howie Mandel be hired for the role. BUT MANDEL DIDN’T SING “GIZMO’S SONG.” The song was written by Jerry Goldsmith, who hired a 13-year-old girl who was a member of his synagogue to sing it for the film. MICHAEL WINSLOW HELPED TO VOICE THE GREMLINS. Yes, this is the same Michael Winslow who is better known as “the guy who makes all those funny noises in the Police Academy film series.' TIM BURTON WAS IN CONTENTION TO DIRECT IT. There was a lot of buzz surrounding Burton after the success of his short film, Frankenweenie—so much so that Spielberg considered him to direct Gremlins. But the fact that Burton had yet to direct a feature film worked against him, and the gig was given to Joe Dante. A year later, Burton released his first theatrical feature,. SECURITY WAS TIGHT WITH THE GREMLINS. Getty Images Because there was no CGI at the time of Gremlins, the creatures were animatronic puppets, each of which took a major chunk out of the film’s budget. Zach Galligan that when leaving the set each night, security personnel asked the cast and crew to open the trunks of their cars to ensure that they hadn’t stolen any of the props. BALLOONS CAME IN HANDY. Creature creator Chris Walas used balloons in an innovative fashion: They were the secret VFX ingredient when the new Mogwai popped out of Gizmo’s body, and he used a balloon again to explode the Gremlin in the microwave. PHOEBE CATES WAS A CONTROVERSIAL CASTING CHOICE. Given her sweet demeanor as Kate, it’s hard to imagine that not everyone was on board with casting Cates. But her infamous topless scene in gave the studio pause about putting her in the lead. CATES’S CHEMISTRY WITH ZACH GALLIGAN WAS WHAT LANDED HIM THE ROLE. Though there were better-known actors like Emilio Estevez and Judd Nelson in contention for the role of Billy, Spielberg cast his vote for Galligan, based on the chemistry he and Cates displayed during auditions. IT’S THE FIRST FILM TO FEATURE THE NOW-ICONIC AMBLIN ENTERTAINMENT LOGO. By now, Spielberg’s E.T.-themed logo for Amblin Entertainment is familiar to all moviegoers. But Gremlins marked its first on-screen appearance. KINGSTON FALLS AND HILL VALLEY ARE ONE AND THE SAME. If the fictional town of Kingston Falls in Gremlins looks familiar, that’s because it was filmed on the same set used for the town of Hill Valley in, released a year later. THE FILM WAS ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED FOR A CHRISTMAS RELEASE. Offbeat as it may be, Gremlins is definitely a Christmas movie, and as such had been planned for release during the Christmas season. But when Warner Bros. Realized it didn’t have a 'summer movie' to put up against or, it moved up the release date. The film performed well and ended up being the fourth highest-grossing film of 1984, behind, Ghostbusters, and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. KATE’S STORY ABOUT HER FATHER’S DEATH WAS A POLARIZING SCENE. As a nod to the popular urban legend, Kate tells the story about how her father died while dressed up as Santa Claus and climbing down the chimney. When the rough cut was complete, both Spielberg and the Warner Bros. Executives wanted it cut, as it wasn’t clear whether it was meant to be sad or funny. Dante insisted that that’s what made it a perfect metaphor for the film itself, and insisted it be kept in. In Roger Ebert’s of the film, he singled out this scene in particular, citing her story as being “in the great tradition of 1950s sick jokes.” 18. BILLY WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE HERO. At the end of the film, Gizmo saves the day by pulling up a window blind and exposing Stripe to sunlight. Originally, Gizmo lifted the first blind, followed by Billy. Spielberg suggested the scene be edited so that it was clear that it’s Gizmo, not Billy, who is the movie’s hero. GIZMO AND STRIPE WERE THE SAME CREATURE AT ONE TIME. It was also at Spielberg’s suggestion that Gizmo’s role in the film grew. Originally, it’s the cute little Mogwai pet himself who transforms into Stripe the Gremlin. But Spielberg knew that audiences would want to see as much of Gizmo as possible, so he withdrew the idea so that they would appear as totally separate characters. THE GREMLINS MAY RISE AGAIN. Though Gremlins did spawn a sequel (1990's Gremlins II: The Next Batch), there’s been much talk in recent years about a reboot of the original. In a 2012 with Screen Rant, Columbus didn't seem totally on board with the idea. “I think it’s impossible to re-create [ Gremlins] in a CGI environment,' he said. 'I think it will inevitably lose some of its charm. Those are edgy Muppets in a sense and you don’t want to lose that sense of anarchy that those gremlins had, because behind the scenes are 25 puppeteers making them to come to life.” But in August 2017, he seemed to have a different opinion on the matter, saying that he had completed a script for a third installment. “I’m really proud of the script,” Columbus /Film. “It is as twisted and dark as anything, so we’ll see. It’s always a budgetary conversation when we’re going to shoot it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie. I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again so hopefully we’ll see that movie soon.”.
